"The power of the Web is in its universality. Access by everyone regardless of disability is an essential aspect."
Tim Berners-Lee
Inventor of the World Wide Web
Why is Website Accessibility Important?
You can never be certain how the end user will view your web pages because hardware, software, screen size and resolution can vary enormously.
Accessible website design, therefore, means designing for diversity. A website should display correctly on a modern Windows PC or Mac as well as Mobiles phones, PDA's, Web TV or a disabled persons screen reader device.
It will also be flexible enough to accommodate the access needs of the end user, e.g. a visually impaired user may need to enlarge text or change colours on the page or someone with mouse control difficulties could use alternative shortcut keys.
An fully accessible website will:
- Increasing audience reach as more visitors will be able to use and read your website.
- Ensure your site complies with disability discrimination law.
- Allow search engines to fully index your site and therefore improve your position.
- Reduce bandwidth and workload on your server because pages are smaller.
- Reduce site maintenance costs as design changes mean changing just one file.
- Increase sales (if you have something to sell)
